Confessions on a Bathroom Floor

No cable + Diet Coke + two Excedrins (R).

Five layers of tile. Vinyl? Linoleum? Black stuff? Sunny-D? And underneath, perfectly fine hex tiles. I'm only 25% finished. So that could change.

It smells like the '30's in my bathroom. Like old. And chemicals. I really hope that black stuff isn't poison.

Tile!

The tile I ordered came in and I picked it up! I was remembering it redder and regretting my decision. So I was very happy when it was more of a brick red. It's cement, so they color it and mold it. So it could have been hyper red. But no!

The lady who helped me told me it would be better installed vertically rather than how I laid it out above. But she can stuff her sorry's in a sack 'cause I like it horizontal! So there, tile lady!

Now I just have to pick the grout color. I'm sure that won't take long at all...

I left my head and my hearth on the dance floor.

Project 37: Re-tile the hearth. Selecting the eight square feet of tile for this space is driving me crazy! So many possibilities! I found these 2" talavera tiles at the flea market. I don't think this is the right direction, but it's pretty cool for something else.

This is where we keep our kitsch...

My husband has a hard time visualizing my thoughts. I try to explain, I use hand gestures, but he wants a drawing. And not a sketch. The man wants to see some semblance of scale!

This is my kitchen. It's not to scale, (shhhhh...), but is pretty close proportion-wise. The left hand upper and lower cabinets actually sit on a perpendicular wall, but I wanted to see the wall treatment all at once.

Since I didn't want to redraw and recolor if I made a mistake, I drew the room on paper and then used tracing paper to add color. I need to go back over the room in black pen, but that could be scary.

The little grids are a suggestion of the square tiles I want on that wall. I'm trying to design a custom tile treatment that I can do myself. 12x12" mosaic square tiles are around $10/sqft. Custom? $125/sqft.

I'm too cheap for that.

Hit 'em Up Tile

 

Someday soon I will slightly redo my kitchen. It needs a new sink and countertop and backsplash and faucet and stove. I mean, our fridge is in the hall*, but our tiled countertop is much, much worse. It just won't stay clean! I'm pretty sure I want the IKEA butcherblock countertops and just simple white tiles for the backsplash, but I also wanted to mix in something excellent.

I found these tiles at Anthropologie on sale for $2! They are actually coasters, but remove those foam squares and I get awesome decorative tiles for cheap. And I don't even have to order them and wait.

I carried the tiles around the store for awhile, I hate to just spend money with no actual project, but Deborah said, "Worst case, you just use them as coasters."

I bought eight tiles, four in each color and I kind of want to go to another store to see if they have any more.

(Amanda? Would you mind checking the Denver area stores? Thanks). 

When I was trying to photograph the tiles, the boys kept trying to touch them asking, "Mom, can I touch them." I said no.

I had no idea I had hand models in my family.


*Yes, our fridge sits in a hall utility closet. Seems when it was built, no one had refrigerators.
